Blog Against Theocracy

[jLanguage default=”english”][english][/english][portuguese][/portuguese][english]Separation between state and church is a recurring debate in portuguese society. It’s more of a warm conversation than a hot debate, but it exists. Slight attitude nuances by the powers at work cause soft reactions, be that the case when crosses and other religious symbols are taken off of classrooms or when changes in state protocol are postponed and new bridges and highways still get the traditional blessing of the local priest…
Somewhat similar to the discussion about wether or not to include a reference to a common judaic-christian background in the European Constitutional Treaty, is the fact that we always have some trouble (apparently) in debating the role of the Catholic Church and its relation with the State, without getting entangled in the issues of our cultural matrix, the alleged or real catholic majority (believers, followers?), the relevance of the church’s social work, and so on… these issues in all its complexity and with real interest help, in fact, to build a somke screen that favors the status quo and is responsible, for instance, for all the delays in the renegotiation of the Concordata (a treaty between the Portuguese State and the Vatican), which continues to be a very a suspicious document. The problem remains: we do not have and we will not have a real separation between State and Church while the border between respecting the moral matrix that shapes us historically and revering the instution that the Church is, remains blurred.

That’s why I join Blog Against Theocracy, even being here, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and I think it would be intersting to keep this subject alive, independent of phenomena.
Luckily to us, portuguese, the manipulation of science and teaching by catholic fundamentalists, is just an american problem. A problem they share with their islamic fundamentalist “partners” and one wonders if understanding how serious that true capitulation of democracy is, could be a way for America to understand the reasons of its failure in the Middle East. All exercises on arrogance by the masses are sources of pure evil. And ignorance.[/english][portuguese]A separação entre Igreja e Estado é um debate recorrente, ainda que morno, na sociedade portuguesa. As ligeiras variações de atitude por parte dos poderes instituídos vão provocando reacções algo ténues, seja quando se exige a retirada de cruzes e outros símbolos religiosos de salas de aula, seja quando se resiste a fazer as alterações ao protocolo de Estado que tornariam as inaugurações de pontes e estradas (por exemplo), livres de benzedura…
Um pouco à semelhança da discussão sobre se a matriz judaico-cristã deveria ou não fazer parte dos termos do Tratado Constitucional Europeu, a verdade é que temos sempre alguma dificuldade (aparentemente) em discutir o papel da Igreja Católica e a sua relação com o Estado, sem nos embrulharmos no problema da matriz cultural, da alegada ou real maioria católica (praticante?), da importância da obra social da Igreja, etc… estas questões, em toda a sua complexidade e interesse real, ajudam a construir uma nuvem de fumo que favorece a permanência do status quo e, por exemplo, adiou ad nauseam a renegociação da Concordata, que continua a ser um documento de carácter muito duvidoso. De facto, o problema persiste: não temos nem teremos separação real entre Igreja e Estado enquanto não se traçar uma fronteira clara que diferencie o respeito pela matriz “moral” que nos conforma historicamente dessa outra coisa que é a reverência à instituição Igreja.

Por isso, associo-me ao Blog Against Theocracy, mesmo estando aqui, deste lado do Atlântico e achava interessante que este assunto não fosse tão feito da discussão de fenómenos.
A nós, portugueses, não nos afligem os males tão americanos da possibilidade da manipulação da ciência e do seu ensino de acordo com ditames de fundamentalismos católicos. Esse é um problema que os americanos partilham com os seus “parceiros” fundamentalistas islâmicos e será talvez através da compreensão da gravidade dessa verdadeira capitulação da democracia que a América poderá compreender as razões do seu fracasso na relação com o Médio Oriente. Os exercício de arrogância de massas são sempre fontes de puro mal. E de ignorância.[/portuguese]
